EXECUTION - Developing The Action Driven Attitude
Soichiro Honda, the co-founder of Honda Corporation, had an amazing ability of never backing down. He was extremely dedicated to the goal by taking decisive actions. In 1938, he was in school. Behind his house, he set up a garage wherein he attempted to make piston ring of four-wheelers. He relentlessly worked hard with the hope that he would soon succeed in making a piston ring.

With his passion, hard work and dedication, Soichiro finally accomplished his goal of making the piston ring. He proposed the design of a piston ring to the officers at Toyota. After taking a look at the piston ring, the Toyota officers dismissed Honda’s design.
Soichiro did not get disheartened, instead, he decided to pursue an engineering course for two years. Along with his education, he kept working on bettering the piston ring. Soon he was successful in making a better piston ring which he again pitched to Toyota. This time, Toyota officers accepted Soichiro Honda’s design of piston ring and the contract of its manufacturing was signed with Soichiro & in this way, his dream got fulfilled.
Construction of a factory to manufacture piston rings begins, but getting the cement required for the construction of the factory becomes almost impossible due to the Second World War going on, in which Japan was also involved. To counter the trouble, Soinichiro Honda, along with his team, starts manufacturing cement as well. As the construction work began, unfortunately, two bombs destroyed the structure of the factory twice. Still, Soinchiro did not give up and within a few days, the construction work came to an end.
The factory started manufacturing piston rings. However, soon it faced another impediment. As Japan was defeated in the world war, the country faced a shortage of petrol and diesel which killed the usage of cars. Ultimately, Soichiro installed motors to cycles and converted it in ‘a motorized bike’, which caused a sensation in the country. Soichiro started manufacturing motorized bikes.
Gradually the design of 'motorized bike' improved further; it was made lighter, which formed the initial frame of the motorised bike. This motorised bike became popular all over Japan. Eventually, the Honda motorbike expands all over America and Europe. Later, Soichiro ventured into manufacturing of four-wheelers and became the biggest name of the automobile industry, in the world.
In short, the ability to take positive action in adversity distinguishes the leaders from the common people. Implementation or execution plays the most crucial role in leadership. The responsibility of the organization, business or company to move forward and improve the performance rests on the shoulders of the leader. For this, you have to go through a definite procedure wherein you think, analyse, plan and finally execute. We see numerous leaders around us, excellent in planning, but implementation becomes a serious challenge for them. Proper execution is ultimately the quality that yields the results.
According to Franklin Covey's research,
1. 85 % of the employees are unaware of the most important goals of their company.
2. 87 % of employees have no clue of what needs to be done to accomplish their goal.
3. 80% of employees have no knowledge of what is the measurement of success according to their work.
4. 72% of employees do not get credit for their performance.
As a leader, it does not matter how astonishing your ideas are. It has no value unless until you are able to execute the plan successfully. To improve execution qualitatively, the five box model compels us to ask four questions:
At the same time, with the help of the five box leadership development model, we will practice the best tools to create the Mindset needed for the effective execution. In short, we work on two things.
