Box 2 - IDEOLOGY - Defining Organizational Identity
During the Second World War, the US dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945, at eight in the morning. The name of the bomb was ‘Little Boy’. More than 80 thousand people were killed in this attack. Unfortunately, 30% of the city population died instantly. Many people kept on losing their lives even after several years of the catastrophe, due to nuclear radiations.

On August 9, the second bomb called 'Fat Man' was dropped on Nagasaki city which killed seventy-four thousand people, injuring people of an equal number. Because of these two attacks, Japan had to pay a huge price for entering the war. Finally, Japan surrendered and World War II ended.
The same year, in 1945, Masaru Ibuka started Sony Company in the ruins of a defeated and desolate Japan. He rented a telephone operating booth in the half-burnt department store in a bombed commercial area of Tokyo. He began working there with seven employees and a personal saving of $ 1600. The journey ahead was not easy at all and there was no innovative or wonderful product in mind.
In this situation, what do you think must have been his first priority? What must have he done first amidst these relics? Would he have thought of a plan to earn easy money? Would he have focused on creating cash flow? Or would he have decided which business to venture in? Would he have launched a product or chalked out a strategy to attract customers?
Definitely, Ibuka focused on all these things. In the initial stage, he made a failed attempt to make a rice cooker, sell a sweet soup, and make a heating pad. Unfortunately, the time displayed a trail of disappointments, but simultaneously he did something very essential. It was very remarkable as an entrepreneur, an entrepreneur who was struggling every day to save the company.
He streamlined the ideology for his company. He wrote the core values and belief system even before setting up his business and making money.
The ideology, he designed for the company, was ‘to create a culture in the firm that could foster the spirit of teamwork and everyone could explore their abilities. At the same time, he also thought of eradicating the desire for an unfair advantage, and constantly focusing on the most important & most essential tasks; not just run after expansion. He gave emphasis on competence, performance and personal character so that every person could perform the best of their ability.'
I would like to ask you two questions regarding your leadership:
Does your company have any ideology or value system?
Is your company living that ideology?
Before talking about the ideology of the company, we must ask ourselves a question.
What is my own individual ideology as a leader?
We need to ask ourselves some fundamental questions to identify and express our own ideology, like...
Who am I? Where have I come from? Where do I want to go? What am I doing here? What is my identity?
The story of the French novel 'Out of My Head' revolves around the above-mentioned questions. One fine morning, the plane lands at the Berlin airport. Along with many passengers, Martin and his wife are also flying in the aeroplane. While showing their visas to the airport authorities at the Berlin airport, both introduce themselves as Dr Martin Harris and Leigh Harris and explain the reason for their arrival in Berlin.
Shortly after that, both hire taxis and leave for the hotel. Leigh enters the hotel and checks in, while Martin is getting the bags off the taxi. Suddenly, he remembers that they have forgotten one of their bags at the airport. Without informing Leigh, Martin takes a taxi and leaves for the airport.
The taxi driver is a girl. Martin instructs her to drive the car faster. Meanwhile, sitting in the taxi, he is constantly trying to call Leigh. Unfortunately, the cell phone doesn’t get the network. The car is moving at a fast pace. There is a truck in front of the taxi with goods loaded on it and tied with rope. Suddenly the rope loosens and the commodities begin to fall in front of the car. To save herself, the girl turns the taxi towards the right. She sees a two-wheeler coming towards the car at a high speed. She turns further right, breaking the road-divider. The taxi falls into a river below. Martin is severely injured and is hospitalised. He is in a coma for four days.
When he recovers from the coma, he finds out that he cannot remember his name. He has lost his memory, he doesn’t remember where he belongs, or what is he doing in Berlin. He has no sense of his identity.
Don't you think, the question Martin asks himself, are the questions we need to ask ourselves. The answers to these queries will create one's identity, making it easier to construct a personal ideology. If you have a personal value system, then as a leader, you can easily provide the ideology to your company or business.
