Some Basic Questions Before Embarking on a Journey of Becoming a Charismatic & Powerful Leader:
According to a survey conducted in 2015, in that fiscal year, American companies spent approximately $ 160 billion on training and development, and the rest of the world spent about $ 356 billion. Despite spending so much money, the level of performance of employees in the organisations didn’t improve too much because, after a few days of training, the employees fell back on their old mental and behavioural patterns. Immediate after the training, the participants described the training programs as excellent, but the magic of those best training programs waned shortly. There was no noticeable difference in the level of performance of the participants before the training and after the training.
As per another survey, every year, American companies spend more than $ 50 billion only on leadership development training. Despite such a vast expense on leadership-related training programs, companies believe that there is a scope for improving their leadership skills a step further.
Now the question is: despite spending such a vast amount on leadership training, why do leadership training programs fail to produce the desired outcome?
One day, I had a workshop on leadership development in a multinational company. At 10:00 am, 25 managers of the company gathered in the training hall for the workshop. I started the workshop with a question. The question was like, why are you sitting here in this training hall? Or what is your purpose in attending this training?
The discussion started, and the managers started giving answers like to learn, to develop skills, to do something new, etc. As anyone can guess, they were all made up answers. I urged them to come up with genuine answers. I said, “will you show courage, to tell the truth? I promise you, whatever we discuss, nothing will go out of this room. So, can we talk freely?”
I again asked the same question: what is your purpose in attending this training? Consequently, everyone opened up gradually and started telling the truth. Some managers said they get one day off and training is a kind of time pass. Some said that the hotel serves great food, some noted that training is mandatory to get the promotion, etc.
God Save! If participants are attending the leadership development training with this mindset, nothing will change even if companies spend billions on training and development. There will be no development in leadership skills.
If you are also participating in a company-sponsored leadership development training program, give a thought to the following questions. Please don’t do it for the development of your company, but do it for your growth, to develop yourself as a better leader and to change yourself.
Before embarking on the journey of becoming a charismatic and effective leader, give a thought to the following basic questions:
1. Why do you want to be a leader?
2. What do you want to achieve by becoming a leader?
3. Hard work is required to become a charismatic leader, then why not keep doing what you are doing currently?
4. Do you have that strong determination, which is very important to become a better leader?
Please do think about these questions before reading further.
Now, let’s consider the last question, do you have that strong determination, which is required to become a charismatic leader? Friends, if you want to be a charismatic leader, then it’s very important to have a ‘strong determination,’ which is the most fundamental and vital quality in this journey. You can also feel that magic will happen if you develop this quality in yourself. It will become easier to establish yourself as a charismatic leader. This ' strong determination ' gives you tremendous confidence. It gives rise to the indomitable fighting spirit in you and also develops the patience to face adverse circumstances.
This 'strong determination ' is the quality due to which ordinary people also created history and climbed the greater heights of success. Strong determination and success have a direct relationship with each other; that is why perhaps all the greatest minds of this world unanimously say that strong determination is the foundation of success. You probably know that the leader creates a new reality for the people connected to him; he makes people adept of seeing new horizons of possibilities. ‘Strong determination’ required in a leader to carry out these tasks successfully & this strong determination comes when we find answers to some basic questions:
Before embarking on the journey of becoming a leader, it is necessary to have clarity in one more aspect, 'What will be our direction as a leader?' And we have to ask three basic questions to understand this:

In one of our visit to Delhi in December 1990, we were roaming on the streets of Delhi, talking to local citizens, visiting various tourist places. In the end, we headed towards the Red Fort, but we lost our way. In those days, there was no GPS to track our location or guide us for the destination. Unfortunately, it was a place where there was nobody to guide us, and there was no signboard on the side of the road either. We knew that we wanted to go to the Red Fort, but we did not know where we were standing at that time. Until we came to know that where we were standing, we couldn’t travel towards our destination; therefore, before embarking on the journey of becoming a leader, we need to find the answer to the question, ‘Where are we standing now?’
Along with this, in the context of leadership, we need to find out answers to some more important questions:
- What resources do we have to achieve our goals?
- What are our weaknesses and strengths?
- What are the traps we need to stay away from?
- Who do you think are the greatest leaders of this world?
- What do you know about those great leaders?
- Who are your ideals in the field of leadership, and why?
- What are your beliefs about leadership? Are those beliefs, right?
- When and why did this thought of becoming a leader pop up in your head?
- Why were you fascinated towards becoming a leader?
- Why do you want to be a leader?
- What had happened that triggered your desire of becoming a leader?
And some more essential questions…
- What is your definition of leadership?
- What do you think about becoming a ‘leader’?
- When I pronounce the word ‘leader’, what kind of image of a leader strikes your mind?
- What is your vision in terms of becoming a 'leader'? (The meaning of the word vision - a dream that encourages you to take action.)
To become a charismatic and effective leader, one should think about these questions, write the answers to these questions, spend some time over these questions, and consider every aspect of leadership. Remember: Clarity is Power.
The more clarity you have on paper about all these questions, easier will be your journey of becoming a leader.
